SCARA Robot: An Arm’s Length Ahead

Robust Jointed-Arm Robots for Industrial Applications

SCARA robots (Selective Compliance Assembly Robot Arm) are deployed in industrial applications where tasks are performed parallel to a work surface."Designed with an arm-like structure, they facilitate precise work in a short time frame. Unlike the more flexible six-axis robots, SCARA robots have four degrees of freedom, consisting of three rotary axes and one linear axis. The advantage of SCARA robots is their compact footprint, robustness, and cost-effectiveness compared to models with multiple axes. They are also known for their high repeatability and long service life. These attributes, along with their significant press-in forces, make them a popular choice for assembly robots in the electrical and electronics industries. However, SCARA robots are also utilized in other sectors, including pharmaceuticals, food, plastics, and metal processing. They excel in performing repetitive pick-and-place tasks, are well-suited for gluing, joining, and assembly operations, and can reliably operate machinery.

How Are SCARA Robots Constructed?

Serial Kinematics With 3 Rotary Axes and One Linear Axis

SCARA robots feature a fixed base with a rotating swivel arm as the first axis of their kinematics. The rest of the kinematic chain, responsible for moving the robot arm links, is connected to this arm via a joint (second axis). At the end of the second arm, there's an integrated vertical and rotatable Z-axis (the third axis). An end effector, like a gripper, can be attached here, allowing for additional linear movements (the fourth axis). This unique kinematic structure provides precise and flexible motion control capabilities.
