A Good Start to a Vacation

When the days are becoming longer, life more carefree, and the weather sunnier – it’s summer!

Summertime is always travel time. And what promises more vacation fun than travel on an airplane? The Frankfurt airport is known as the linchpin of Europe. In terms of passenger volume, with about 60.8 million passengers last year, it only trails its European counterparts in London (75.7 million passengers), Paris (65.9 million passengers) and Amsterdam (63.6 million passengers).

These figures were certainly inconceivable at the start of professional aviation in the United States in 1914, when the world’s first airline, the St. Petersburg-Tampa Airboat, was launched. A great deal has happened since then. In 2015 alone, 3.66 billion passengers flew on about 34 million flights. An unbelievable distance of about 8.148 trillion km was covered in 2015 – by comparison, the moon “only” averages a distance of about 384,403 km from the earth, whose distance from the sun is 149.6 million km on average.

The Frankfurt airport is also impressive for its earthly statistics, since it is the most significant hub for products and goods in Europe. About 2.1 million tons were handled in 2016.

With so many kilometers flown, goods shipped, and passengers transported, and with comparatively few accidents – the airplane is still considered the safest means of transportation by far— it becomes quite obvious that everything has to mesh perfectly. The use of the highest quality materials is essential – even for the smallest components. It is no wonder that sealing solutions from Freudenberg Sealing Technologies (FST) are on board every flight.

For example, Simmerrings, which are extremely robust, are used in landing gears, on tires and brakes, in engines, and in flight control systems. The components are exposed to extremely high stresses at takeoff and landing in particular. There is no room for error here.

FST’s solutions ensure the impermeability of the aircraft hull, for example in the cabin, in the baggage compartment and at the windows, for a safe flight, since there is a substantial difference between the external air pressure at flight altitude (about 10,000 meters) and the cabin pressure (equivalent to an altitude of about 2,500 meters). At the Paris Air Show, FST recently presented a new product line of PTFE seals for the aviation industry. PTFE is especially suited to aerospace applications in which resistance to extreme temperatures and high contact pressures, along with reliable leakage control, is crucial for safe and efficient operation, in hydraulics, for example.

Thanks to its comprehensive material and production expertise, FST offers its aerospace customers tried-and-tested products as well as individually developed sealing solutions that meet all system requirements. The company provides more than 200 aerospace-specific material mixtures that it produces itself and that have been tested for a multitude of applications, such as engines and transmissions, landing gears, wheels, brakes and window seals. In this way, FST sealing solutions provide a smooth technological process and a safe arrival at your vacation destination or back home.
